Meet the Leadership Team of Emphysys

John Montrone
General Manager
John Montrone joined Emphysys in 2019 and now leads the company as General Manager. John is responsible for the continued expansion of Emphysys’ long-term client base, as well as the growth and development of the Emphysys engineering team. John has an extensive background in the medical device industry leading both product development and engineering service organizations. Leveraging over 25+ years of experience in developing life-sustaining, therapeutic and diagnostic systems, he is responsible for providing the technical capabilities required by clients who must deliver truly differentiable products in the industrial measurement/control, life sciences and medical device markets.
Prior to Joining Emphysys, John was Vice President of Medical Products at Foliage and Altran Group, serving in a variety of leadership and delivery roles including: Engineering Manager, Solutions Lead and Account Manager. John has a deep knowledge of regulated development and has led dozens of teams in the design of products ranging from implantable heart pumps to high power radiotherapy delivery systems. Previously, John led the development of the Critical Care Monitoring product line at Siemens Medical and at EDO Corp; developing passive sonar and communication systems for the US Navy. John holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.

Donna Tinsley
Vice President, Finance
As Vice President of Finance for Emphysys, Donna oversees all financial functions for the company including accounting, finance and tax strategies, asset protection, and reporting to ensure compliance with federal, state and local entities. Additionally, Donna manages the human resources function for the company.
Prior to joining Emphysys, Donna served as Controller with Nexx Systems which was acquired by Tokyo Electron Limited during her eight years with the company. Donna played a key role in the design and implementation of processes and internal controls that supported the company’s growth and subsequent sale. Previously, Donna was President of Semilab USA, a metrology solutions provider for the photovoltaic and semiconductor industries. Donna also served as Vice President of Finance and Administration and Corporate Secretary for SemiTest, Inc., and was instrumental in the sale of SemiTest product lines to Semilab Hungary.
Donna holds a BS in Business Administration from Merrimack College and an MBA from Northeastern University. She received a Certificate in International Finance and Marketing from École supérieure de commerce et d’administration de Reims, France. She also holds certifications in Managing Human Resources and Project Management from Northern Essex Community College.

Daniel Smith
Director of Modeling and Simulation
Daniel Smith joined Emphysys in 2019 and currently serves as the Director of Modeling and Simulation. Daniel brings 16 years of experience with high end finite element analysis, software development, mathematics and physics. Daniel works with the Emphysys engineering teams, providing comprehensive understanding of the underlying physics and operating principles of client products under development.
Prior to joining Emphysys, Daniel was head of development for North America at COMSOL for 12 years where he oversaw the development of the MEMS, Plasma, Microfluidics, Particle Tracing, Ray Optics, Semiconductor and Molecular Flow modules. Previously, he worked at MKS Instruments where he modeled and optimized various types of fluid calibration and plasma systems. Daniel holds 13 patents and has a MSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of St Andrews, and an MSc in Numerical Computing from the University of Manchester.
