Meet the Leadership Team of Emphysys
Ali Shajii, PhD
Founder and CEO
Ali Shajii has served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Emphysys since 2009, bringing more than 25 years of technology development and business management experience to the company he founded. A distinguished pioneer in the field of RF power systems and plasma physics, Ali is instrumental in developing and strengthening partnerships with clients. He contributes to all technical facets of the company’s multi-disciplinary client programs. He is responsible for building out the technical capabilities required by clients who are under pressure to deliver truly differentiable products in the life sciences, medical device and industrial markets.
Prior to founding Emphysys, Ali was Vice President of Corporate Research & Development and Chief Technology Officer for the Power and Reactive Gas products division of MKS Instruments, a manufacturer of gas analysis and control systems used in semiconductor manufacturing and other industrial processes. Previously, Ali served as Director of New Product Development at Axcelis Technologies, a supplier of high-energy, high-current ion implanters and process control instrumentation for semiconductor fabrication. He began his career at the MIT Plasma Physics and Fusion Center as a Senior Staff Scientist designing large-scale superconductors for nuclear fusion and particle accelerators.
Ali holds 57 issued U.S. patents. During his career, he has published 20 technical papers in numerous peer-reviewed, scientific journals including Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Applied Physics, Physical Review Letters, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer and Cryogenics. Ali holds a BS in Nuclear Physics and Engineering from University of Wisconsin–Madison and a PhD in Nuclear Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Vice President, Business Development
John Carey directs and drives the company’s sales strategy and market development. He joined Emphysys in 2019 after spending 23 years at Foliage and Altran Group. Altran acquired Foliage in 2014 and over his combined tenure John served in in a variety of executive roles including: Vice President of Business Development, General Manager of Medical and Life Sciences business unit, and CEO of the Innovative Product Development division in North America. Prior to Foliage, John held business development roles in the healthcare information system industry for Cerner Corporation, Meditech, and Versyss. John holds a BS in Business Administration from Northeastern University and also served four years in the U.S. Navy.
Vice President, Medical Device Technology
Shaun Welches, inventor and engineering executive, joined Emphysys in 2019 as Vice President of Medical Device Technology. Drawing on 25+ years of experience providing strategic leadership, establishing and directing engineering policies, objectives and initiatives aligned with long-term product and profitability goals, Shaun is responsible for guiding the expansion of our medical device technology business. Shaun has in-depth knowledge of specification, design, integration and qualification of complex power electronics systems, Class 4 lasers and medical devices.
Prior to Joining Emphysys, Shaun served as Sr. Vice President of R&D for Cytrellis Biosystems, a clinical stage medical aesthetic company. Previously, he was Vice President of Engineering and then advanced to Sr. Vice President of Electrical Engineering for Cynosure, responsible for building multidisciplinary engineering teams and driving flagship technology and product development efforts including PicoSure®, the world’s first picosecond aesthetic laser.
Shaun holds 10 issued U.S. patents and has worked extensively with laser-induced optical breakdown technology (LIOB) for tissue regeneration and novel RF power medical device applications.
Vice President, Advanced Technology
Dan Masse joined Emphysys in 2012 and currently serves as the Vice President of Advanced Technology. Dan’s innate talent to envision the concepts and ideas of clients combined with his ability to model complex solutions and apply practical manufacturing and metrology methods is instrumental in bringing the product concepts of Emphysys clients to reality in short time frames. Working across technical disciplines, Dan builds and leads multidisciplinary engineering teams in the timely and successful execution of complex technology development projects and programs.
Prior to joining Emphysys, Dan led excimer laser product development at JPSA Laser (now IPG Photonics). In this capacity, he was responsible for mechanical and electrical systems design and the integration of excimer lasers into complex turnkey systems for the semiconductor and LED equipment markets. Dan began his career as a mechanical engineer at MARKEM Corporation (now Dover Corporation) and Pacer Corporation where he took on engineering roles of increasing responsibility. Dan holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a BA in French Literature from the University of Notre Dame. Dan is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
Director of Modeling and Simulation
Daniel Smith joined Emphysys in 2019 and currently serves as the Director of Modeling and Simulation. Daniel brings 16 years of experience with high end finite element analysis, software development, mathematics and physics. Daniel works with the Emphysys engineering teams, providing comprehensive understanding of the underlying physics and operating principles of client products under development.
Prior to joining Emphysys, Daniel was head of development for North America at COMSOL for 12 years where he oversaw the development of the MEMS, Plasma, Microfluidics, Particle Tracing, Ray Optics, Semiconductor and Molecular Flow modules. Previously, he worked at MKS Instruments where he modeled and optimized various types of fluid calibration and plasma systems. Daniel holds 13 patents and has a MSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of St Andrews, and an MSc in Numerical Computing from the University of Manchester.
Vice President, Finance
As Vice President of Finance for Emphysys, Donna oversees all financial functions for the company including accounting, finance and tax strategies, asset protection, and reporting to ensure compliance with federal, state and local entities. Additionally, Donna manages the human resources function for the company.
Prior to joining Emphysys, Donna served as Controller with Nexx Systems which was acquired by Tokyo Electron Limited during her eight years with the company. Donna played a key role in the design and implementation of processes and internal controls that supported the company’s 44% CAGR and an initial public offering. Previously, Donna was President of Semilab USA, a metrology solutions provider for the photovoltaic and semiconductor industries. Donna also served as Vice President of Finance and Administration and Corporate Secretary for SemiTest, Inc.
Donna holds a BS in Business Administration from Merrimack College and an MBA from Northeastern University. She received a Certificate in International Finance and Marketing from École supérieure de commerce et d’administration de Reims, France. She also holds certifications in Managing Human Resources and Project Management from Northern Essex Community College.
